TOKYO MARATHON 2012 was held in February 26th.
Michael Kipyego came behind to take over the lead with 4Km to go and won with 2:07:37, the third fastest time in Tokyo Marathon history. Arata Fujirawa was second with personal best of 2:07:48. It was his third second place in Tokyo marathon, having finished second in both 2008 and 2010. He runs well in even number year.
Behind Fujiwara, Kazuhiro Maeda and Takayuki Matsumiya set personal best also. The 2008 champion Viktor Rothlin was 5th with 2:08:32, his first sub-2:10 marathon since 2008 Tokyo Marathon. In all three of the top eight runners set personal best and top eight runners broke 2:10 Marathon barrier.
Haile Gebrselassie, who took the lead at 36Km and was heading to victory, faltered badly in the closing stage and faded to fourth. However, his time, 2:08:17, was 11th sub-2:09 marathon of his career. As for the number of sub-2:09 marathon, Haile is now one behind Jaould Gharib, who has 12.
In the Women’s race, Eri Okubo was heading to victory. She led by a minute and 45 seconds at half way. However, when Okubo slowed, Atsede Habtamu started to pick her pace up. Habtamu covered 35 to 40Km in 16:50 and caught Okubo just before 40Km; Habtamu won in 2:25:28, course record. Ten runners cracked 2:30 for the marathon this year, highest in history of Tokyo marathon.
