Afforestation that leads to less pollen; thinning old cedar forests and planting cedar varieties that emit less pollen to reduce overall pollen counts

Afforestation that leads to less pollen; thinning old cedar forests and planting cedar varieties that emit less pollen to reduce overall pollen counts

Tokyo Development Foundation for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

One of the sources of Tokyo‘s drinking water is located in a forest in Tama, which provides us with various significant benefits by protecting the water source, absorbing and storing CO2, as well as other functions. Due to dwindling demand for domestic lumber, Japanese cedar forests that are 30 or more years old are growing, causing Japanese cedar pollinosis. To cope with this situation, we are cutting down old Japanese cedars and replacing them with a cedar variety that emit less pollen.
