Competition Rules The races will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the IAAF, the JAAF and the Race Organizer.
IAAF Road Race Label Regulations also apply to the Tokyo Marathon 2013, which has been certified by the IAAF as a Gold Label road race.
Time Limits
  1. (1) Marathon : 7 hours
  2. (2) 10km Race : 1 hour and 40 minutes
  • * The enforced time limits are based on the gun time (not a chip time).
  • * The cut-off time will be enforced at each checkpoint due to limited duration of traffic control, security operation and event operation. The runners who fail to pass through the checkpoint before the cut-off time will be disqualified from the race.
Furthermore, trailing runners who lag excessively behind the cut-off time pace may be asked to leave the course any time.

Maximum Numbers of Participants
  1. (1) Marathon: 35,500 participants (including 100 elite runners, 3,000 charity runners and 3,000 premium members of "ONE TOKYO," the official club of the Tokyo Marathon)
  2. (2) 10 km: 500 participants
  1. 1) Marathon: Must be at least 19 years of age on the race day
    1. 1-1) General participants
      Runners, including handicapped, domestic and international runners recommended by the race organizer, capable of completing the race under 6 hours and 40 minutes.
      • - Athletes registered with the JAAF in fiscal 2013.
      • - Athletes not registered with the JAAF.
    2. 1-2) Elite Athletes
      • - Athletes, registered with the JAAF in fiscal 2013, who satisfy the special requirements set forth by the JAAF.
      • - Invited Athletes: domestic and international Runners recommended by the JAAF.
    3. 1-3) Wheelchair
      Total of 25 athletes, both men and women, capable of completing the race within 2 hours and 10 minutes riding the racing wheelchair.
  2. 2) 10km Race:
    1. 2-1) U-18
      Total of 275 male and/or female runners between 16 and 18 years of age on the race day who are capable of finishing the race in 1.5 hours or less (Runners born between February 24, 1995 and February 23, 1998 are eligible).
      *Including 100 runners to be selected separately by an organization mandated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to run projects linked to the Great East Japan Earthquake recovery efforts.
    2. 2-2) Visually Impaired
      Total of 50 male and/or female runners aged 16 and above on the race day capable of finishing the race within 1.5 hours
      *Each runner who has difficulties in running the race alone must be accompanied by one guide runner.
    3. 2-3) Intellectually Challenged
      Total of 100 male and/or female runners aged 16 and above on the race day capable of finishing the race within 1.5 hours
      *Each runner must be accompanied by one guide runner.
    4. 2-4) Organ Transplant Recipients
      Total of 50 male and/or female runners aged 16 and above on the race day capable of finishing the race within 1.5 hours
      *"Organ Transplant Recipients" only includes those who have undergone organ or bone-marrow transplantation.
    5. 2-5) Wheelchair
      Total of 25 male and/or female athletes aged 16 and above capable of finishing the race in 35 minutes on the racing wheelchair.
Entry Fee
  1. Marathon: Domestic 10,000yen (from overseas 12,000yen)
  2. 10km: Domestic 5,000 yen (from overseas 6,000 yen)
  1. (1) Procedure
    Runners can apply either via the Internet.
  2. (2) Application Period
    From Thursday, August 1, 2013 10:00 a.m. JST to Saturday, August 31, 2013 5:00 p.m. JST.
  3. (3) Selection Process
    In the event of over-subscription, a drawing will be held to determine runners. Results of the drawing will be notified to all applicants in late September (tentative).
  4. (4) Payment
    Accepted applicants must pay the entry fee by money transfer to the designated account before the deadline.
    *Applications from elite runners will be accepted from December.
    *Applications from charity runners will be accepted from Monday, July 1, on a first-come, first-served basis (up to 3,000 charity runners) .
    *Priority applications may be submitted by the premium members of ONE TOKYO, the official club of Tokyo Marathon Foundation, from Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 31 (3,000 places)
  1. (1) Marathon
    1. (a): Top eight overall male and female finishers will be presented with awards. (They are not eligible for age-group awards)
    2. (b): Age-group awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners in each age-group category (at five-year increments) (Award certificates will be mailed after the race day.)
  2. (2) 10km
    Top three overall male and female finishers will be presented with awards.
Prizes Prizes will be awarded based on results and in accordance with a separate set of rules.
Pre-race Check-in
  1. (1) Dates: February 20, 21 and 22, 2014
  2. (2) Venue: Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2014 site (Tokyo Big Sight, West Exhibition Hall)
  3. (3) Hours: 11:00 a.m. JST to 8:30 p.m. JST (tentative) on February 20 and 21
    11:00 a.m. JST to 7:30 p.m. JST (tentative) on February 22
    * Please note that the check-in desks will close at 7:30 p.m. on February 22, so that participants will have time to prepare and rest before the race day.
    1. (a) No check-in will be allowed on the race day (February 23).
    2. (b) Participants must check in during the hours specified above.
    3. (c) A photo ID is required for check-in.
      (Check-in must be completed by runners in person; check-in by the nominee representing a runner is not permitted.)
    4. (d) No check-in by persons who fail to present photo ID.
    5. (e) Separate check-in for wheelchair participants will be announced later.

Miscellaneous issues
  1. (1) Entry fee will not be refunded in the event of the cancellation of the race if such cancellation is not attributable to the organizer.
  2. (2) The participants who are registered with the JAAF must make sure to confirm their registration status with the JAAF prior to applying for a place in the Tokyo Marathon and enter correct registration information in the application form. The organizer reserves the right to verify the status. On the race day, JAAF-registered participants are assigned to the "start block" that is scheduled to take off immediately after the elite runners.
  3. (3) Please be prepared for the race. This includes a physical check-up and sufficient training before the race.
  4. (4) Personal belongings of the participants may be checked in at the start point. The organizer will transport them to the finish area. Arrival of the checked items may be delayed due to traffic conditions.
  5. (5) Poor road conditions/delays in public transportation do not serve as grounds for excuse for participants' failure to complete the check-in procedure during the prescribed period or failure to arrive in time for the race start.
  6. (6) No designs, logos or trademarks associated with corporate and product names may be worn or displayed for publicity purposes during the race (on the course and start/finish areas).
  7. (7) The organizer may authorize third parties to sell photographs and other souvenirs.
  8. (8) Instructions by the organizer must be followed with respect to all matters not provided for herein.
  9. (9) Receipts for Entry Fees, etc.

      No receipts will be issued.
      Please refer to the account statement issued by your credit card company.

      No receipts will be issued. Please use the funds transfer stub in lieu of a receipt.

For the 2014 race, runners can only apply via the Internet sites, as indicated in last year's guidelines. No hard-copy application forms will be available.

Terms and Conditions for Tokyo Marathon Application

  1. (1) In case of accidents, illness or loss of personal property, liability of the organizer is limited to emergency treatment.
  2. (2) After submitting an application, cancelling or switching event due to personal reason is prohibited.
  3. (3) Illegal participation (participation by other than the registered runner) as well as falsifying age or gender is strictly prohibited. It will result in cancellation of entry.
  4. (4) Entry fee will not be refunded if the race was cancelled due to natural disaster such as earthquake, storm, snow, accidents, or other incidents beyond the control of race organizer.
  5. (5) In case of overpayment or double payment, the overpaid amount will not be refunded.
  6. (6) Copyright of images, photographs and articles covering the event, and their usage right for TV broadcasting, newspapers, magazines and internet, belongs to the race organizer. Aforementioned copyright includes but not limited to names and other personal information such as age and address (country, prefecture and city only) of entrants mentioned in the article covering the event.
  7. (7) The event organizer will comply with privacy protection laws and assures the confidentiality of information provided by the race entrants.
  8. (8) The event will comply with all domestic laws and regulations.
  9. (9) In addition to aforementioned Terms and Conditions, the event will adhere to all race regulations.

Application and Race Participation Process

Premium members of "ONE TOKYO," the official club for the Tokyo Marathon Foundation, can apply in advance between July 1 (Mon) and July 31 (Wed). Applications for the Tokyo Marathon 2013 Charity "Tsunagu" Runners will begin on July 1 (Mon). (3,000 runners on a first-come, first-served basis)

Application and Race Participation Process

Regulations and Guidelines on the Application Procedure

Applicants who cannot observe the following will be rejected in the entrant selection (or disqualified when it is found after the race), and no refund will be made. Moreover, applicants will never be allowed to participate in our future races.

  1. (1) A duplicate application for the race entry by the same applicant is prohibited.
  2. (2) Falsifying name, age, gender, nationality, residence, or record is strictly prohibited. Modification of entry information in the application form or cancellation of entry after submitting application will not be allowed. If the organizer identifies problems with entry data, the Marathon Office will contact the runner via either an e-mail or telephone.
  3. (3) Certain PCs, browsers and operating systems may cause errors in your application process through the internet.
  4. (4) The organizer will not be responsible for delay in the application process due to any network connection problems during the application process.
  5. (5) The lottery result will be notified to all applicants via e-mail by the end of September (subject to change). Till then, applicants should not change their e-mail address, or they cannot confirm the result. Please be aware that we will not verify correct delivery of e-mail. The organizer will not be liable to any detriment caused by undelivered e-mails, due to wrong e-mail address, security software settings and so forth.
  6. (6) Please be aware that Entry Desk or Marathon Office will not be able to answer questions regarding the status of an entry, result of a lottery, etc.
  7. (7) Successful entrants are required to deposit their entry fee by a designated date. If the entrants fail to do so, their entries will be canceled automatically, and cannot participate in the race.
  8. (8) Be sure to complete entrant registration (Bib Number pick-up) during three days before the race day (EXPO). To register, present your valid ID. No check-in will be permitted on the race day. Please also note that proxy registration is not accepted.
  9. (9) Transferring Bib Number to other runner or allowing a substitute runner is strictly prohibited.

Privacy Protection

The organizer, in recognition of the importance of protecting personal information, abides by all laws and ordinances concerning the protection of personal information and adheres to the organizer's personal information protection policy when handling personal information. The organizer may use personal information for the purposes of delivering better service to the participants. Information may be used in connection with the preparation of the race guide, results notifications, notifications of relevant information, and the delivery of services by event sponsors, support organizations and their affiliates, in addition to results (rankings) announcements. The organizer or its representative may contact participants to confirm information stated in their application forms.
